You know that thing that happens when your finger comes into contact with a surface properly sensitized to detect human appendages?

That, friends, is called a tap.

(Or a touch, or a press, or a push if you’re feeling so inclined.)

It is not, however, a click, and if you’re referring to it as such, then don’t.

Listen: find yourself the nearest glass surface. Try prodding it with your finger. What kind of sound does it make?

That’s right: a sort of “tap”-ish sound. Definitely not something that could be onomatopoeized as a “click”.

And if you prod most gadgets of the touch screen persuasion¹, you’ll end up getting that same tap, and so you should generally be referring to it as such.
